Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Sigma Rho Omega Chapter in collaboration with LSU Shreveport Health is pleased to announce the engagement of twenty-eight individuals from the Hollywood Heights area who have started to Eat Right and Move! The community-placed research program is led by Dr. Marie Vazquez Morgan, Assistant Vice Chancellor of Institutional Wellness at LSU Health Shreveport and the Program Director is Pamela Levy, FNP-BC of Sigma Rho Omega Chapter. Since the inception of the program in June 2021, participants have been meeting three times a week for exercise and nutrition/cooking classes.

Dr. Morgan reports “Our participants have been so excited about starting this new healthy lifestyle and have been coming into workout even on ‘off days’! We are hopeful to facilitate sustainable lifestyle modification through this pilot program by training peer health mentors and replicating the program in other areas that harbor food deserts and areas of need in order to promote health and wellness in our local marginalized populations.”

The program has collaborated with other local organizations such as LSU Ag Center, St.Luke’s Mobile Ministry, and Cotton St. Farms.   This program is funded by grants from the Gannett Foundation, The Community Foundation of Northwest Louisiana, and the Sigma Rho Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®.
